Through the process of preparing for jesus christ superstar themes of opportunity and redemption have been at the forefront of my mind I ve seen what happens when we punish and let fear drive how we treat ourselves and each other I ve also seen what happens when we invest in people when we support and rehabilitate we build healthy and strong communities ones where we can learn grow and be our best selves individually and as a society if we as a society are willing to stop punishing so much and instead invest in education in treatment in counseling in fighting poverty we can break the cycles of victimization that tear us apart we can create the kinds of communities where all people can flourish freeamerica

They just don t get it it seems many white americans especially the white media just don t understand that in the african american community the n word has many different meanings depending on the context and situation in other words for black people it s a Hot The Lion King Allergic To Idiots shirt word with many different favors about two years ago the white media got wind of memphis forward matt barnes tweet that used the n word and barnes was fined by the nba and required to apologize for using the word barnes is black matt barnes responded after the white media accused him of using a racial slur the word I used is a word that’s used on the court used in the locker room used amongst my friends and family it’s a regular word to me I think my mistake was using it in a social manner which I regret and I apologize for it but you guys have to get used to it if you look at the particular way I said it kids are seeing that through music through their favorite artists and probably some of their favorite movies and even on tv now the word is not necessarily a racial slur barnes still defends his use of the controversial term nba hall of famer charles barkley who is also black defended barnes’ use of the n word and supported him for refusing to apologize for using it yet to this day the white media continues to refer to what matt barnes did as racial slander just this morning two years after the barnes incident the los angeles times in a sports article about something else described barnes as someone who tweeted a racial epithet they still hadn t gotten the point yes it is a positive step that white america is trying to outlaw the n word and ban its use and there is no argument that white people themselves should never use the word but for the african american community it isn t that simple therefore it is important that white people understand the black point of view on this topic so you may ask what does the n word really mean to black people please indulge me and allow me to quote a section of my novel the daughters of joe stubbs that might help advance this discussion in my novel a young black pastor who conducted weekly poetry and rap music workshops for the young people in his church told the central character of my novel joe stubbs what he told the kids one night when the class was discussing the n word when a black mother calls her children to come in for dinner and says you little n gers march upstairs and wash your hands before sitting down at the table the term is said with love and tenderness when a young black woman says about a black man she finds attractive that’s one good looking n ger it’s a remark of aesthetic approval when a black member of the audience says to his friend sitting next to him that funny little n ger up there really cracks me up he’s bestowing praise on the black comic up on the stage and when two black men square off in anger and one says to the other n ger you better get out of my face this signifies a danger that these two men are about to fight the young minister looked at joe and said the same word with a hundred different meanings nothing more nothing less joe but when a white person uses that term there s only one meaning and we all know what that meaning is he then said proudly by discussing it in this way my kids saw what a complicated word the n word is and how profound the responsibility is when a black person runs the risk and uses it in racially mixed company the kids were so struck by how the context determined the meaning that most of them decided they wouldn’t use the word anymore one girl said when we use the word around them white kids then think it’s ok for them to use it and if they use the word ‘n ger ‘ then we black kids want to beat them up how can we expect the white kids to understand how we’re using it it s impossible so i’m not using that word anymore I can write my rap lyrics without using it on the race question america is making progress I suppose but the black community must be given time to decide what they are going to do with that dreaded yet multipurpose word in these so called post racial times after all they had to endure the white man s hateful use of that word against them for over 400 years and they took the word and turned it into something useful for them that was what matt barnes was trying to say in a paradoxical way the awful days of jim crow and segregation gave the black community space where black folks could converse with each other in private using whatever words and expressions that best fit the occasion now social media has taken that space away in this age of the internet and social media no one on earth is safe from the eavesdropping and window peeking and yes criticism of outsiders and drawing your window shades is no longer possible will gibson novelist.
